Bowling Green Resident Recieves National Recognition

Posted by Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce - 6/18/2009 10:35:00 AM

A local resident was honored Tuesday with The Jefferson Award in Washington, D.C., for her exceptional contributions to the Bowling Green community. Martha Haynes received the award primarily for her significant philanthropy to Bellewood Presbyterian Homes for Children, a local, nonprofit agency that serves abused, at-risk and homeless youth throughout Kentucky.

The Jefferson Awards, which began in 1972, are a prestigious national recognition system honoring community and public service in America. The awards are presented on two levels: national and local. Bowling Green is one of approximately 90 communities in the U.S. that participate in the awards on a local level.

Haynes won the local Jefferson Award in April along with three other Warren County natives: Ret. Col. Robert Spiller, his wife, Cora Jane Spiller, and Hilda Sarver. Afterward, Haynes was nominated by the local board to be honored in the National Ceremonies in Washington, D.C.

As part of the three-day ceremony held this week, Haynes received her award and spoke before all the recipients and their guests about the services she performed that resulted in national recognition.

“My father always told me that wherever I went I should make sure it was a better place when I left, in part, because of what I’ve done,” Haynes said.

Congratulations Bowling Green High School and WKU's Carol Martin Gatton Academy

Posted by Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce - 6/12/2009 08:57:00 AM

Newsweek recently released its 2009 list of the top 1,500 high schools in America, and while Bowling Green made its third appearance on the list, it managed to jump more than 500 places on the list from 2007 to being ranked No. 554 in the country.

The Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science at Western Kentucky University, also made a special appearance in the magazine’s lists, devised by Washington Post Education Columnist Jay Mathews. The academy was excluded from the list of the top 1,500 schools in the country and instead recognized in a separate “Public Elites” category created for schools predominately consisting of “few or no average students.”Joining only 15 other schools recognized in the country, the Gatton Academy’s distinction marks the first time a school from Kentucky has been seen on the elite list.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Service One Credit Union to install Living Roof
at Campbell Lane Green Addition

Bowling Green, Ky (06/03/09) – Service One Credit Union is set to install a LiveRoof® on the Campbell Lane Green Addition. The installation of this green roof will take place Tuesday and Wednesday, June 9th and 10th, 2009.

LiveRoof® is an integrated system designed by growers in conjunction with experts in the fields of architecture, roofing, logistics, and ergonomics. The benefits of adding this living “green” roof to the Campbell Lane branch are astounding. Indoor temperatures during warm/ hot weather will be decreased by 6 to 8 degrees and air-conditioning costs may be reduced up to 50%. It is estimated that LiveRoof® will extend the lifetime of this roof by 200 to 300 percent, by protecting the rooftop from ultraviolet radiation, large temperature fluctuations, drying winds, and punctures. The soil in the green roof system will act as a sponge, absorbing excess rain water and significantly reducing the storm water runoff into our sewer systems. Habitat recreation is a notable benefit as well. The plants and soil in LiveRoof® will help create a habitat for butterflies, insects and birds. The green roof will be the first of its kind in Bowling Green.

Service One Credit Union continues to make every effort with the Campbell Lane Green Addition to obtain the platinum level of LEED certification. The Green Addition currently boasts geo-thermal heating and cooling, a bio-retention basin, reclaimed timbers, ICF walls, earth berms, grass pavers, recycled floor coverings, glass block windows with nanogel, and natural day-lighting.

The Campbell Lane Green Addition has a highly anticipated completion date of mid-summer, 2009.

Service One Credit Union was chartered in 1963 as a not-for-profit financial cooperative to assist Western Kentucky University's faculty, staff and students in attaining their financial goals. Service One Credit Union's membership now includes numerous SEGs (Select Employee Groups) throughout south-central Kentucky. It is a full-service financial cooperative serving more than 14,000 members through its four branch locations and on the internet at www.socu.com.
