Leadership Bowling Green’s Arts & Media Day on March 14, 2025, was an inspiring journey through the creative and media landscape of Bowling Green. From historic landmarks to cutting-edge newsrooms and cultural hubs, participants gained a deeper understanding of the industries shaping the city’s artistic and storytelling legacy.

Rise & Shine: Kicking Off a Day of Discovery

The day began at the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce, where Justin Gearlds, Chair of Leadership Bowling Green, welcomed the group. Following introductions, class officers led a session on “Habit 6: Synergize,” highlighting the importance of teamwork, collaboration, and the power of diverse perspectives. With comfortable shoes on and curiosity in tow, participants set out for a full day of immersive experiences.

A Step into History: The Capitol Theater

At The Capitol, Magnolia Gramling, Manager of the Warren County Public Library, guided the group through a tour of this historic venue. From its days as a bustling movie theater to its present role as a community arts and event space, participants gained insight into how The Capitol remains a cornerstone of Bowling Green’s cultural landscape.

Breaking News: Behind the Scenes at WBKO

Next, the group traveled to WBKO, where General Manager Tim Coles, Assistant News Director Brennan Crain, and News Director Caitlin Huff offered an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the fast-paced world of broadcast journalism. Attendees learned about the teamwork, technology, and split-second decision-making that go into delivering the news every day.

 

A Blend of Art & Nature: Downing Museum & Baker Arboretum

The mid-morning stop at Baker Arboretum & Downing Museum provided a refreshing change of pace. Jack LeSieur, Museum Director, led participants through stunning exhibits showcasing local and international artists, all surrounded by the lush landscapes of the arboretum. This stop offered a moment of reflection and appreciation for the intersection of art and nature.

Big Red Spirit: Inside WKU’s Football Press Box

After lunch, sponsored by Mellow Mushroom, the group headed to WKU’s Paul Just Media Room to explore the history of Big Red, WKU’s beloved mascot. Audrey McDole, WKU Co-Big Red Coordinator, shared the origins and evolution of Big Red, offering a fun and spirited glimpse into one of Bowling Green’s most recognizable symbols. Participants also toured the WKU Football Press Box, gaining insight into sports media coverage and game-day operations.

The Grand Stage: SKyPAC Tour

The final stop of the day took participants behind the curtains at SKyPAC, where Rob Hankins, SKyPAC Development Officer, provided an exclusive look at the region’s premier performing arts venue. From production logistics to community programming, attendees discovered how SKyPAC serves as a vibrant hub for music, theater, and artistic expression in Bowling Green.

Reflections & Cheers: Wrapping Up an Unforgettable Day

To close out a full day of exploration, the group gathered for reflection and networking at White Squirrel Ambulance, followed by an after-hours social at Hickory & Oak. Participants shared key takeaways, favorite moments, and newfound appreciation for Bowling Green’s thriving arts and media scene.
